Sustainability: Preparing for the Future

Sustainability is a term applied to many different areas of business. In 1987 the Brundtland report “Our common future” defined sustainability as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”  (WCED, 1987). I believe that careful planning can bring about sustainable competitive advantage for your business that is not at the expense of the environment.

Whilst at the European Summer School for Advanced Management (see MBA & PMP) I opted to study Dr. Harry Vredenburg’s module “Competitive Strategy and Sustainable Development”, which focused on case studies in the extractive industries.

I’m particularly interested in the alternative energy trend and renewable power sources. In my own time I’ve researched diverse projects such as tidal power development and biodiesel plants as well as attending conferences highlighting the opportunities presented by the move towards a lower carbon society.
